Expert: Snow can shield plants from winter frost

A layer of snow can be beneficial to plants during the winter because it protects them from frost and low temperatures, says Nigel Colborn. Gardeners, however, should protect fragile trees by wrapping their branches with wire or a heavy-duty string. Borderline plants at the ground level should be covered with thick bulky mulch paired with netting or horticultural fleece, Colborn adds.
