IOM takes steps to ensure EHR implementation safety

An Institute of Medicine committee will spend a year examining the safety of electronic health records and the question of whether regulation is needed to guarantee patient protection. The Committee on Patient Safety and Health Information Technology had its first meeting this week. National Coordinator for Health IT Dr. David Blumenthal said his office contributed $989,000 to the IOM group. "We want to make sure that implementation is as safe as it can be and all safety benefits are realized," he said.
