Many Illinois teacher aides not qualified under NCLB

Even though almost 40% of teacher aides last year fell short of NCLB's "highly qualified" requirements, Illinois education officials say they're not going to tell districts to fire paraprofessionals who don't meet the requirements by this summer's deadline. Chicago school officials have been gearing up for the new standards by sponsoring refresher courses for the state exam and by recruiting aides out of local college programs.
