Detroit board fires superintendent after less than 18 months

The Detroit school board voted 7 to 4 on Monday to place schools superintendent Connie Calloway on administrative leave with pay pending a public hearing on her termination that she has the option of requesting, after the state superintendent wrote a letter outlining the Detroit district's financial mistakes and appointed an emergency financial manager. "It is an unjust decision," Calloway told the board. "It is fueled by several attempts to silence me to prevent the transparency, to prevent fiscal accountability and to prevent open dialogue about the right way to handle the public's money."
