3% rise in U.S. civil-litigation costs expected for 2009

A drop in auto miles driven and a decline in medical-malpractice cases resulted in only a $2.7 billion increase in U.S. civil-litigation cases in 2008, according to a study by Towers Perrin. But costs could increase by 3% this year as a result of the financial crisis and rising medical-malpractice lawsuits.
