Social studies teacher spends fellowship in N.Y. legislature

Middle-school social studies teacher Joseph Giannetto took leave from the classroom during 2012-13 to take part in a yearlong fellowship working as a staff member for New York state Sen. Toby Ann Stavisky, D-Flushing. Giannetto, who was among 15 fellows, said the professional-development opportunity allowed him to learn first-hand about the legislative process including policy research, budget meetings and hearings. The experiences will enhance his teaching of these subjects, he said.
