Watkins transitions from direct sales to retail

J.R. Watkins Co. has been selling extracts and spices since 1868, and the company has made inroads into retail sales in the last several years with 26 extracts accounting for 5.4% market share for the year ending Nov. 3, according to IRI. The company is now turning its sights to the spice channel, launching a line of 52 gourmet spices last year and dry seasoning mixes this year. Supermarkets and retail channels now account for most of Watkins' $120 million in annual sales.
