Duncan known for compromise, reform

President-elect Barack Obama's pick for Education Secretary, Arne Duncan, has become known for his ability to compromise throughout his tenure as Chicago Public Schools CEO -- most evident in his strong relationship with teachers unions despite shutting down failing schools and supporting merit-based pay. Duncan favors the accountability No Child Left Behind places on schools, but in the past has called for more funding for schools to meet benchmarks mandated in the law.
