Economists expect Fed to cut rate, try other steps

Economists said the Federal Reserve is likely to cut its benchmark overnight rate to 0.5% and then turn its attention to less-conventional approaches to stimulate the U.S. economy, such as direct intervention in markets. Chairman Ben Bernanke said in a recent speech that the Fed could intervene by buying private debt to narrow spreads or purchasing U.S. government bonds to drive down yields.
