Few bosses enjoy firing people, but too many make the process unnecessarily painful for all concerned, writes Sharlyn Lauby. Leaders should get smart, consistently holding their employees accountable so that termination proceedings don't catch anyone off-guard. "I've had employees shake my hand after being fired," Lauby notes. "They knew it was coming and the conversation was done with dignity."
