EIA: Rise in shale gas, ethanol output could slash oil imports by 2035

Natural gas production from domestic shale resources will reach 12 trillion cubic feet per year by 2035, doubling the output projected last year, according to the Energy Information Administration. Along with tougher fuel-economy rules and an expected gain in ethanol output, higher domestic gas production will help slash oil imports by 2035, according to the EIA's annual long-term outlook.
