Is education in China experiencing a period of transition?

Jaime A. FlorCruz in this commentary writes about an experience with the Teach For All global network that highlighted the pros and cons of China's evolving education system. Among other things, FlorCruz found that China's education system relies heavily on rote memorisation and recitation -- focusing less on creativity and independent thinking. Some educators have found that system outdated, FlorCruz writes, and the country now is moving toward integrating "learning with thinking", "learning with practice" and "teaching children according to their aptitude."
