Hydrogels may bring artificial cartilage a step nearer

Three-dimensional fabric scaffolding to hold stem cells developed a few years ago was seen as the key to creating artificial cartilage that could one day provide relief for aching joints. Now the problem of what to use to fill the empty spaces left by the scaffolding may have been solved with a proposal for durable hydrogels that comes from Xuanhe Zhao, assistant professor of mechanical engineering and materials science, and a team of researchers.
