Suspension bridge plan for Bay Bridge discarded

California has opted to discard the signature design for the self-anchored suspension bridge for the east span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is calling for a substitute concrete viaduct that would save around $500 million, but the plan faces opposition from Bay Area residents and lawmakers.
