Column: Travelers should appreciate air travel

Few travelers appreciate how remarkable flying is, writes Patrick Smith in The New York Times. Smith calls air travel a "sterling example of a successfully evolved technology." He also notes that, according to the Air Transport Association, fares in 2006 averaged 12% lower than in 2000, despite huge increases in fuel costs. In addition, Smith writes, air travel is impressively efficient and safe.
