United expects fourth-quarter revenue gains

United Airlines said today it expects its mainline revenue to increase between 2.5% and 3.5% in the fourth quarter. The company said it expects its unrestricted cash to drop to about $2 billion by the end of the fourth quarter. If other carriers report revenue gains for the fourth quarter, it would be a turning point: Data from the DOT's Bureau of Transportation Statistics show the six largest network airlines have reported losses for four consecutive quarters, largely due to high jet fuel costs.
