Fiber-optic system will monitor stresses on Delaware bridge

A network of fiber-optic sensors will allow Delaware Department of Transportation engineers to monitor stresses on the new Indian River Inlet Bridge when the project is finished in 2011, officials say. The system, expected to endure the 100-year lifespan of the bridge, is the first of its kind in the U.S. It will also allow engineering students to study the effect of weather and traffic patterns on the bridge.
