Green railroads offer ecological choice, cost advantage

Rail may be greener than trucking, but shippers say they still base their delivery decisions on price. But the two are linked, according to the Association of American Railroads. "Ultimately, rail customers' shipping choices -- like most business decisions across all industries -- are driven predominantly by total cost," says Holly Arthur, AAR spokeswoman in Washington. "The things that make railroads green, such as their inherent fuel efficiency and associated lower greenhouse-gas emissions, also help make them more competitive on cost to the their customers."
