25 states to reform teacher-prep programs

Teacher preparation is likely to be a major focus for policymakers in the new year, observers say following an announcement that school chiefs in 25 states intend to make changes to the way new teachers are trained and licensed. Participating states will work to implement recommendations contained in a report created by a Council of Chief State School Officers task force, which included three members of NASBE's board of directors. Among other things, the group suggests that teacher-certification standards be aligned with "college- and career-ready standards."
