Calif. third-graders write persuasive letters to Santa

Educators at Laguna Beach Unified School District in California are emphasizing writing skills and cross-curricular connections in the early grades as they transition to the Common Core State Standards. Students in one third-grade class recently wrote letters to Santa Claus to argue why they are the best animal to work for him to pull the sleigh or do other tasks, an assignment educators said requires the young writers to think critically and use evidence to support their arguments.
