Coast Guard proposal would let fracking wastewater be transported via barges

A proposal by the Coast Guard would allow energy firms to use barges for transporting wastewater from hydraulic fracturing. Energy industry groups argue that hazardous materials are already being shipped by barge safely. "We expect that shale gas wastewater can be transported just as safely," said Jennifer Carpenter of American Waterways Operators. Environment America disagreed, calling upon the Coast Guard to reject the proposal.
