Pope Francis takes Advocate's Person of the Year award

The Advocate named Pope Francis its 2013 Person of the Year on Monday, citing supportive statements he has made toward the LGBT community. The magazine's staff praised Francis' calls for compassion and tolerance, adding that his statements have the potential to sway public opinion among anti-LGBT Catholics. "The remaining holdouts for LGBT acceptance in religion, the ones who block progress in the work left to do, will more likely be persuaded by a figure they know," Lucas Grindley of the Advocate wrote.
