U.S. hospitals lobby NIST on cybersecurity guidelines

An industry association representing U.S. hospitals is calling on federal officials to ensure that any new regulations geared toward enhancing the nation's cybersecurity take the special needs of the health care community into account. The American Hospital Association in a letter to Patrick Gallagher, the undersecretary of commerce for standards and technology of the National Institute of Standards and Technology, said it agreed with the basic framework being advanced by the NIST but emphasized the need for flexibility and attentiveness to the unique security restrictions associated with patient privacy laws.
