Senate Passes Education Package

The U.S. Senate today approved President Bush's far-reaching education plan by a vote of 87 to 10. The bill calls for the annual testing of third- through eighth-graders and gives school districts greater flexibility in spending federal aid. Both Democrats and Republicans praised the bill, which has been hailed as the most aggressive federal education reform effort since the Elementary and Secondary Education Education Act in 1965.
