Judge weighs challenge to mayor's control of L.A. schools

The Los Angeles school district told a superior court judge Friday that a new law giving the mayor partial control of schools as of Jan. 1 violates the state constitution, while the assistant city attorney argued the mayor's new powers amounted to only a "minor intrusion" that does not rise to the level of an actual takeover. The judge is expected to rule this week.
