Engineers overcome challenges at ShoWare Center

The city of Kent, Wash., hoped to complete the ShoWare Center before the 2008 hockey season, but engineers faced engineering challenges as well as problems raising the structure's roof. Because the site for the center was on weak soil, engineers used pile foundations to bear on strong soil much deeper underground. The structure's "overhung" shape also helped minimize the number of building-support points.
