Best-seller lists brim with management books that are whimsical or merely practical, but an enlightened leader needs more depth. Leadership guru Gary Hamel says a worthy book must challenge dogma, extend your horizons or inspire you to higher principles. "There's little to learn from a book that panders to your prejudices and recycles old shibboleths," he says. He includes a brief list of classic must-reads.
