German chemical makers Merck and Lanxess plan temporary cutbacks

German chemical producers Merck KGaA and Lanxess say they plan to reduce production. Merck KGaA says it will close several manufacturing facilities for several weeks in the first half of 2009, and Lanxess plans temporary production cutbacks and plant closures this month and next that will affect about 1,400 employees.
