Next FDA chief must know industry, health groups say

The FDA Commissioner Coalition, comprising 34 patient and research groups, sent a letter asking HHS Secretary-designate Tom Daschle to select an individual with sufficient knowledge of the health care sector to be the next FDA chief. The coalition said industry ties should be deemed a "positive qualification" for candidates and that the next leader's decisions should not be affected by "pressure from elected and appointed officials and from the news media."
