Legislation passed by the House of Representatives this week would extend the current highway and transit funding law through the end of September 2010. The legislation, which still needs Senate approval, includes more than $37 billion in funding for road and rail work -- 50% of which states would need to have under contract in 90 days. Meanwhile, some observers urged lawmakers to focus on long-term funding for transportation projects. The Senate is expected to look at the legislation next year.
