Opinion: Alabama's investment in NBCTs is money well-spent

National Board Certified Teachers in Alabama receive a $5,000 pay increase and a $5,000, one-time award for classroom expenses. The state and its districts also help offset application fees. That is money well-spent, according to this editorial. Alabama has 1,781 NBCTs, including 233 who earned national certification this year. "What if every child had a chance to be taught by a National Board Certified teacher? I think the difference it would make in our students' lives would be extraordinary," Education Secretary Arne Duncan said recently.
