Foot-and-mouth outbreak inevitable, veterinarian says

Veterinarian Paul Sundberg of the National Pork Board sees an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in the U.S. as inevitable. FMD last broke out in the U.S. in 1929, but because the virus is known to be present in more than 100 nations, it is very likely that it will wreak havoc in the U.S. again. Vaccination against the disease is challenging because the virus has seven distinct serotypes and 60 subtypes, but vaccines are in development.
