Medical providers seek to turn brownfields into health care sites

Health care providers are increasingly looking for opportunities to turn brownfields into health care centers to serve poor neighborhoods, where an outsize number of such contaminated sites are located, experts say. "The environmental issues are significant, and yet there are scarce resources for communities to do the cleanup and remediation that's required," said Phyllis B. Cater, CEO of Spectrum Health Services. Spectrum received $2 million in federal cleanup funds toward a $14 million project at a Philadelphia brownfield.
