ACI, other industry groups hopeful for TSCA reform

The Chemical Safety Improvement Act presents an opportunity for consistent chemical regulation across states and a "credible, federal program" that increases public confidence, said Ernie Rosenberg, president and CEO of the American Cleaning Institute. The bill is based on a previous version from the late Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J., but includes changes that "make it actually possible to pass it," Rosenberg said. The bill may not require the Environmental Protection Agency to take "all the actions that the NGOs want EPA to take, but if EPA doesn't initiate action, [it's] not because the law is weak; it will be because EPA did not agree that the chemical needed to be controlled," he added.
