Using laser technology to keep polar bears safe

Laser technology known as lidar could allow researchers to pinpoint the location of polar bear dens and help keep them safe from potential threats caused by oil drilling. A new study found the technology could be used to identify as many as 95% of the dens. "A lot of oil and gas exploration happens in the winter -- that's when bears are in their dens, rearing their young," said Benjamin Jones, co-author of the study and a research geographer for the U.S. Geological Survey Alaska Science Center.
