Reports paint grim picture for retail through 2009

Retail sales will remain weak throughout 2009, according to a report released Thursday by TNS Retail Forward. At the same time, Barclay's Capital released its own report saying that a variety of factors would continue to put pressure on retail. "The near-term earnings backdrop could favor discounters and dollar stores (which are somewhat counter cyclical) as well as defensive quickservice, supermarket and drug retailers," Barclays said.
