Adding a plastic layer to solar cells could make them more efficient

Researchers at the University of Texas have found that adding a layer of pentacene, an organic plastic semiconductor material, to a silicon-based solar cell could make the photovoltaic device more efficient in converting light to electricity. The pentacene layer captures overexcited electrons in the solar cell, electrons that would ordinarily be released from the cell as heat.
