CDC: Most Americans exceed recommended salt intake

Among 1- to 13-year-olds, daily salt intake dropped slightly between 2003 and 2010, but 80% to 90% of them still exceed recommended sodium consumption, CDC researchers reported. The Institute of Medicine recommends that people ages 14 to 50 restrict their salt intake to 2,300 mg per day; the report found that more than 90% of them consumed more than the suggested amount in 2010. The findings appear in the agency's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.
