FDA challenges manufacturers to prove their antibacterial products are safe

The FDA proposed Monday that makers of antibacterial hand soaps and body washes prove that their products are safe and effective for long-term use. The American Cleaning Institute and the Personal Care Products Council, in a joint statement, said antibacterial soaps in some instances "have been found to be critical in the reduction of infection and disease." ACI told The Associated Press that the "industry sent the FDA in-depth data in 2008 showing that anti-bacterial soaps are more effective in killing germs when compared with non-anti-bacterial soaps."
