Sequencing helps scientists break antibiotic resistance

Scientists seeking to combat antibiotic resistance are testing silver and other substances that make bacteria more vulnerable to attack, using genetic sequencing to find effective drugs and trying to neutralize harmful bacteria instead of killing them outright. Some 23,000 people in the U.S. die each year from drug-resistant bacterial infections, the CDC says. Advances in genomic sequencing have allowed scientists to find vulnerable targets faster than ever, scientists say.
