Many of the leading diseases in the U.S. are most prevalent among the older population. A major impediment to research that seeks to intervene in the course of age-related diseases -- and the disability and death that often results -- is the absence of well-accepted intermediate measures, or biomarkers, of the processes of aging. These biomarkers of aging would allow treatments to be measured to show their impact on the aging process. The nonprofit Alliance for Aging Research has spearheaded the development of a research initiative that seeks to identify and validate biomarkers of aging, and is currently seeking funding to get the initiative under way.
