Weight-loss surgery rates surge

The number of people undergoing surgery for weight loss has soared in recent years, with bariatric operations increasing 450% between 1998 and 2002, and the number continues to rise, according to a new study. There were 12,775 weight-loss surgeries in 1998; an estimated 171,200 will be performed this year as more patients chose laparoscopy, which requires less recovery time.
