Do bonuses kill motivation?

Bonuses can backfire if not handled properly, so managers should consider what they're trying to achieve with the reward and the message it sends to employees about the company, experts say. "If you think of the bonus season as a way to make up for sins throughout the year, then don't waste your money," says Aubrey Daniels, author of "Bringing Out the Best in People."
