Veterinarian Pete Keesling explains that comprehensive dental cleaning includes ultrasonic removal of tartar below the gums in an anesthetized patient. Tartar harbors bacteria that can cause damage to the tooth root and can also be problematic for patients with other conditions, such as a heart murmur.
