Economists: Payroll-tax standoff could send U.S. into recession

If the deadlock in Congress prevents an extension of the payroll-tax cut, the U.S. could slip back into recession in 2012, according to economists surveyed by CNNMoney.com. Gross domestic product could drop 0.4 percentage points in the first quarter if the payroll tax increases, the economists said.
