EPA fines Georgia DOT, contractor for polluting streams

The Georgia Department of Transportation and a contractor settled a complaint by the federal Environmental Protection Agency that accused the contractor of dumping debris left over from two highway projects into trout streams, with DOT approval. The DOT and the contractor, which both deny acting improperly, will have to pay a $1.5 million fine and more than $1 million in cleanup costs.
