Weight-loss "betting" programs can motivate people to diet

Programs such as DietBet, HealthyWage and stickK that put money on the line for weight loss can work as a motivational tool to get people engaged in dieting. A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association from 2008 showed that people in a weight-loss incentive program, such as a lottery or deposit contract, lost about 13 pounds, compared with 4 pounds for those who did not participate.
