CMS drops some restrictions on telemedicine

The 2014 Medicare physician fee schedule allows for reimbursement of telemedicine services in metropolitan areas that are defined as rural by the Office of Rural Health Policy. Additionally, an amendment to legislation repealing the Medicare sustainable growth rate formula allows providers in accountable care organizations, patient-centered medical homes or other alternative payment models to offer telemedicine. Another amendment establishes telehealth demonstration projects.
