Pa. pastor who officiated gay son's wedding is defrocked

United Methodist Church officials formally defrocked the Rev. Frank Schaefer on Thursday as punishment for violating church doctrine by officiating his gay son's wedding in Massachusetts six years ago. Schaefer, who was suspended last month, had refused to voluntarily surrender his credentials because of his belief that the church needed to accommodate its LGBT community. "I cannot voluntarily surrender my credentials because I am a voice now for many -- for tens of thousands -- of LGBT members in our church," Schaefer said.
