State exchange officials see surge in enrollments as deadline nears

An expected surge in health insurance enrollments has begun as the deadline for getting coverage by Jan. 1 approaches, state insurance exchange officials say. Nearly 2 million people who have been determined eligible for coverage have not finished enrolling in a plan, federal officials say. The Dec. 23 enrollment deadline has already been extended in some states and may be extended nationally if heavy traffic causes exchange website failures.
